Why Church Is Important

The Bible urges us to not ‘give up meeting together’ (Hebrews 10:25). Indeed, most of Paul’s letters in the New Testament are written to churches or men serving within churches, with an aspiration to encourage and equip the people of the Church for living a Godly life and sharing the gospel.

The CU is not a church. We, in no way, intend to be the spiritual home for Christians whilst at university. We simply gather together sharing in the truth of the bible and sharing fellowship with each other, with the intention of bring the good news to the student population with outreach events and personal evangelism.

We look to work in partnership with local churches. Students are in a very insular and almost artificial environment, and as such, we can greatly benefit from the wisdom and experience of Christians in different situations to ourselves. In one sense, the members of the CU are missionaries sent out by their local churches to evangelise on campus.

In Nottingham we have a good number of bible centred churches from which the majority of the CU members go to. This list is by no means exhaustive.

Looking For A Church

Here are a few primary things to think about when you are looking for a church in Nottingham:

Healthy bible teaching – (2 Timothy 3:14-4:5)
Joyful friendship, support and encouragement – (Acts 2:42-47)
Devotion to prayer – (Colossians 4:2)
Obvious hospitality and love for one another as well as a real concern for people of the city – (1 Peter 4:9-10)
Love for, emphasis on and therefore regular preaching of the Gospel of Jess Christ. Could you take a non-Christian friend along to hear the Gospel clearly and appropriately explained? – (1 Corinthians 15:1-8)

Secondary things to consider

• Is the music the kind of music I like?
• Is the length of the sermon what I’m used to?
• Do lots of other students go there?

Some final warnings

It probably isn’t particularly helpful to go church-shopping for the whole of the first term. Find a church that you are comfortable with and settle in as soon as possible! Try not to look for a clone of your home church – you probably won’t find it and it may not be the best place to go even if you did.

The CU will organise a church fayre and trips to churches in the first term, if you would like to meet people to go to a church, email us and let us know.

Christian Centre

The Christian Centre is a church of around 1300 people, based in the city centre about three minutes from Trent City campus. We aim to be relevant to the 21st century, and have a big desire to impact our city and beyond for the better.

We are a place where all are welcome: whether you’re curious or convinced, disillusioned or envisioned, hurting or content.
